Stocking adequate spares has become a major cost component for manufacturers. Also, with new products coming into the market regularly, the product life cycle is getting shortened which means after the product life cycle has elapsed, it has become extremely difficult to find spares. Thanks to 3D Printing, it is now very much possible to maintain a digital repository of all spare parts and print them as and when required. This reduces the spare parts stock-age and handling costs drastically. Also manufacturers can support their products for a longer period of time thus increasing the product life cycle.
In some cases, 3D Printing is being used to print the end parts of the automobiles directly. This helps reduce the overall manufacturing time esp. for complex parts and parts that are required in niche quantities. Already, some companies have started 3D Printing the automobile chassis directly. In near future, it is very much possible to print many components directly using 3D Printing thus reducing the overall production time.
